How To Clean Leather Jackets With Care

They say style and sophistication never goes out of fashion. If there’s any garment that’s a testament to this statement, it is the iconic leather jacket. Besides keeping you warm, a leather jacket signifies class, quality and durability.

Above all, no matter what the occasion may be, you can always don a leather jacket to make a style statement. It perfectly complements your outfit.

That being said, leather jacket is high maintenance clothing. Leather is highly susceptible to dust, dirt and damage. In fact, it is one of the hardest materials to take care of.

So how do you clean and maintain your favorite leather coat? Here are some helpful tips you need to follow:

Cleaning

For starters, take a damp cloth or baby wipe to remove visible dust. You can use a fresh piece of soft cloth and warm water to remove spots from the surface of your leather coat. Make sure the water is warm, not hot.

Avoid cleaning your leather jacket with soaps or detergents as they contain harsh chemicals. Chemicals can lighten or darker your leather jacket’s color easily.

If you choose to use a detergent, it has to be mild. Always test it on a small surface before using it on the entire coat. Use soft, gentle strokes to avoid damaging your leather coat. Don’t forget to clean the inside surface of your coat. Also keep in mind to not use too much detergent. It can soak through the leather.

Leather swipes

Leather swipes can clean, condition and protect leather jackets. You can get one from the market. Swipes are a quick and convenient way of cleaning leather garments.

Olive oil

Dab a little bit of olive oil on a soft cloth. Rub it on your leather coat. Don’t let the oil soak into the leather though; it will leave behind stains.

White vinegar

White vinegar is another great product for cleaning your leather jacket. If you see a spot, dab your jacket with a bit of white vinegar. Leave to dry.

Conditioning

After cleaning your leather coat, remember to condition it. Conditioning gives leather garments a soft and polished look. In addition, it is the key to making your leather garments last longer.

Different types of leather attire require different conditioners, designed specifically for them. As with cleaning, be very careful while conditioning. Follow the directions to avoid damaging it. At the same time, try to condition your jacket frequently, even if you put it in storage during summer. Otherwise, the jacket will become stiff.

While these tips are suitable for minor stains, the best way to get rid of bigger issues is letting the professionals do the job.
