Some Common Laundry Myths

When it comes to laundry, we all go for methods, tips, and tricks that take the least amount of time and are the cheapest to solve our dirty laundry dilemmas. While there are some great laundry hacks out here on the internet, there are also a lot of laundry myths circulating the world wide web. If you or anyone close to you have accidentally used them, then you would know that all such tips and tricks end up making your laundry dilemmas worse. Not to mention all that extra money needed to fix the damage.

We understand how frustrating it gets. Imperial Valet is here to help you separate the facts from fiction with myth-busting. Let’s go through some common laundry myths so that you know how to protect your clothes the next time you come across one.

Washing Clothes Each Time after Wearing Them

Most garments don’t need to be washed that frequently. For instance, denim, linen, and wool don’t require frequent washes. As far as your daily clothes are concerned, wash them after you wear them at least twice or thrice. This does not apply to your gym clothes, as those need frequent washes.

A Hotter Temperature Equals Better Cleaning

Water temperature has an important role to play when it comes to washing clothes. While hot water does kill germs, it has to be over 212 degrees Fahrenheit to actually work. The hot water produced by domestic home heaters isn’t that hot at all. Apart from this, while hot water does help with stain removal, too hot water causes the fabrics to shrink. In some cases, this might damage the materials. At times, it’s better for the overall environment and your clothes to wash them at a lower temperature than 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

A basket of dirty laundry and a bottle of detergent

Contrary to common belief, adding more detergent to your laundry doesn’t mean your clothes will look squeaky clean. The opposite applies here. If you add more detergent than recommended, the machine will not mix and adequately wash all the detergent away, leaving some to stick to your clothes. This happens regularly when powder detergents are used. The detergent or soap left behind causes skin irritation and causes the color of your clothes to fade.

Hand Wash Items Should be Hand Washed Always

Here a little common sense goes a long way. Hand wash doesn’t mean that all clothes need to be washed by hand, and they can be put in the washing machine as well if you’re extra careful about it. For instance, if your washing machine has a delicate setting, then use that for clothes that need a hand-wash.

So there you go. We have busted some common myths for you. If you’re still unsure what works and doesn’t, no issues. We at Imperial Valet are just a call away.
